Under common law in Australia, copyright is free and applies automatically when any artistic work is created. Copyright exists from the moment of its creation until 50 years after the creator's death, after which time the rights of the work go into public domain wherein all can benefit from it. For the majority of works created by hartflicker, the producer reserves this moral right.

However, in cases when there has been an collaborative effort in the production of a film or video made for the common good hartflicker assigns the work as copyleft.

Copyleft is in essence a license that encourages the re-use, modification and re-distribution of creative works free of charge so long as the derivative work remains available on the same terms. Therefore, works produced by hartflicker under the banner of 'copyleft' can not be then taken and used for financial or individual gain, and the resultant work must remain free and available to all.

hartflicker sees the idea behind the copyleft concept as way of maintaining freedom of knowledge and creativity. hartflicker also recognises that copyleft helps to disseminate and amplify important ideas, thus these ideas reach a greater audience and have a greater impact on our social, political and legal systems.

hartflicker is also interested in the "Share Alike" licensing arrangements of Creative Commons.

Projects assigned copyleft or Share Alike will be marked on this website. hartflicker invites artists interested in modifying one of our copyleft products to respect us as the originators by contacting us, according us recognition and defending our moral rights.
