As globalisation increases and urban sprawl spreads, cities are gradually becoming more and more homogenised, losing any sense of character and cultural difference. DUMPSTER DIVERS

YO SOY DEET

This is Deet’s story – a portrait of an eccentric and outspoken Jewish grandmother from Chicago now living on her own and far away from her family as an ex-pat in Antigua, Guatemala. Although it's cheaper living in Central America than the States, Deet is struggling to make ends meet. She brazenly approaches travelers and backpackers in the town square and offers her services as a masseuse. However, it's lonely only mixing with people who are 'passing through' and Deet yearns for somebody special in her life.

MELVIN'S DISABILITY

True to the mockumentary format, Melvin's Disbability follows the story of a man with fictitious disability... Melvin has 'pipes' for arms. The film focuses on the small and big things that make his life unique... whether it's the differences in the daily routine or the difficulties of relating to family and friends. Using black humour, Melvin (played by Robert Mullins) shows us all that, when it comes down to it, everyone just wants to belong and be loved.

CAMPING IN TOKYO

This frenetic and fun mini-doc explores the culture of pitching a tent and spending the night 'outdoors' in one of the world's most built-up and heavily populated cities. There are many parks and open spaces in and around Tokyo... the perfect place to pitch camp. The economic downturn throughout Asia in the 90s has seen these public areas become makeshift townships made of canvas and debris - a very unusual sight in Japan where homelessness is a taboo subject. However, the question remains: can a cheeky Aussie backpacker save the money he'd normally spend on expensive hostels, and cash in on the authorities reluctance to confront squatters camping in the park?

BUSINESS AS USUAL

For the first-year screen production units at QUT Creative Industries in Semester 1, 2020, students were asked to respond to the COVID-19 crisis. Their main project involved working in isolation to make a 1-2 minute, edited non-fiction video in the style of a factual insert. They also needed to include a pitch, script, and risk plan. So, we put together some examples. One of these was filmed on an iPhone 6 (no apps, no tripod) by Phoebe Hart and is called Business as Unusual. It’s about 50 clips in total, and Phoebe used pots, a glasses case, and a selfie stick as a makeshift tripod. She recorded the voice-over in the wardrobe using the iPhone earbuds. The whole thing was edited, mixed, and graded in Adobe Premiere Pro V14.

FILM ACADEMIC STRUGGLES WITH ZOOM BEFORE 9AM

Created in the thick of COVID-19 lockdowns, this short experimental video captures the chaos and comedy of trying to appear “lecture ready” before 9am - in a world mediated entirely by Zoom. Filmed using multiple virtual backgrounds and live webcam layering, Film Academic Struggles with Zoom before 9am transforms the banal rituals of online teaching into a kind of digital performance art. Against a backdrop of academic detritus, the work explores the dissonance between professionalism and exhaustion, sincerity and absurdity. Part satire, part survival diary, this micro-essay reflects on the strange intimacy of the pandemic classroom, where bodies, bandwidth, and boundaries all blurred. It documents a moment in time when higher education went fully online, and “turning on your camera” became both a technical act and a psychological one.

GOROKA TAIM

Goroka Taim is a reflective digital documentary that builds on the legacy of “change-making” stories created by DFAT Australia Award fellows from the University of Goroka during their 2015 visit to Queensland University of Technology (QUT). Those fellows crafted community-based screen narratives to share their experiences in Brisbane, aiming to promote women’s economic empowerment in Papua New Guinea (PNG). In a continuation of this dialogue, Goroka Taim follows Dr. Hart and Ms. Newsome on their first journey to Goroka in September 2016, supported by a QUT ECARD Travel Fellowship. Their mission: to reconnect with PNG filmmakers and strengthen local media production capacity. Through intimate encounters and cultural exchange, the film explores collaboration, resilience, and the transformative power of storytelling across borders.

CONGRATS! YOU MADE IT TO UNI

A funny take on the typical worries first-year university students face when they start at QUT, all from the perspective of a Gen Z influencer. The piece kicks off with a montage of the vibrant, lively Welcome Week Market Day, along with a fun clip with our presenter. It features an interview with a lecturer and a sitcom-style scene with two clueless students, capturing the excitement and nerves that new students often feel, while also helping to ease anyone watching who’s just starting or thinking about college. To wrap it up, our presenter shares a joke, showing that the “uni experience” doesn’t have to be all serious. Bright colours and contrasting musical styles are key elements throughout.
